Sonnenerde Organic Hemp Soil 20L – Peat-Free Living Soil based on Terra Preta (Ready to Grow)

The Sonnenerde Organic Hemp Soil 20 Liters is a Living Soil specialty soil that functions like a small ecosystem in the pot: microorganisms, fungi, and soil life help the plant to make nutrients continuously available – without you having to constantly re-fertilize. The result is a pleasantly simple setup for Urban Gardening, medicinal plants, and demanding potted crops, where you focus on stable results instead of corrections.

  • Peat-free – made from regional raw materials
  • Free from perlite & coir – real "soil" with structure and buffer
  • Ready-to-grow: supplies plants throughout vegetation, flowering, and fruiting phases
  • Active soil life (microorganisms, fungi, micro-organisms) for natural nutrient dynamics
  • Buffer effect – better compensates for daily fluctuations
  • Reduced water consumption with stable supply

What makes the Organic Hemp Soil special?

The recipe is based on Terra Preta and relies on a combination of composted plant material, organic biochar, wood fiber, expanded clay granules, and horn meal. This gives you a substrate that holds water, brings air to the roots, and slowly and controllably releases nutrients – exactly what many seek in potted cultures when they don't want to react "every minute."

Practical tip: A white fungal mycelium in the substrate can occur – this is not unusual for organic, living soils around horn meal and is usually a sign that something is working in the soil. The main thing is: do not overwater and ensure air exchange.

Suitable for

  • Pot, planter, Smartpot / fabric pot
  • Greenhouse & balcony (Urban Gardening)
  • Medicinal plants, herbs, vegetables, ornamental plants and robust potted crops

Application (short & practical)

  1. Fill pot, plant, water thoroughly once.
  2. Then keep evenly moist – not continuously wet.
  3. As a rule: no constant re-fertilization necessary. Less is often more here.

Tips & Tricks: How to get the most out of it

  • Watering with care: Living Soil likes consistency. Rather soak thoroughly and then let it dry out again, instead of "a little" every day.
  • Fabric pots/Smartpots are a real sweet spot: more oxygen at the roots, more stable root climate.
  • Irrigation systems can work great if they don't "overwater." For suitable solutions: Irrigation at Vetter Grow.
  • Don't forget the climate: Good soil can buffer a lot – but without air exchange, it becomes difficult. If you work indoors, a stable environment (tent/box) helps: Grow tents & Grow boxes.
  • Reuse instead of discarding: After cultivation, organic soil can often be "refreshed" (e.g., with compost/topdressing) – saves money and raw materials.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about Sonnenerde Organic Hemp Soil

Do I need to fertilize additionally?

The Organic Hemp Soil is designed as a "ready to grow" soil that provides plants with nutrients and trace elements throughout the entire phase. In practice, this means: good watering management is usually sufficient – without constant re-fertilization.

Why is a white coating/fungal mycelium sometimes normal?

Organic components (e.g., horn meal) are slowly broken down by fungi and microorganisms. A white fungal mycelium is not automatically a problem. It is crucial that the soil is not constantly wet and receives sufficient air.

Is the soil suitable for balcony & urban gardening?

Yes – that's exactly what it's often used for: pots, containers, fabric pots, or greenhouses. Its buffering effect makes it pleasantly forgiving in everyday use.

Can I use the soil for young plants?

This works well for many robust crops. If you have very delicate seedlings, optionally start them in a milder substrate and then transplant them into the Organic Hemp Soil – this makes the start particularly relaxed.

For which systems is Living Soil not intended?

This soil is not designed for pure hydro setups (e.g., DWC/Aero). It plays to its strengths in potted cultures – where soil life can work.
